Hermann Zapf was a master of type design, book design, and calligraphy. Born in Nuremberg in 1918, he began working in publishing as a photo-retoucher, and was inspired to be a letter-designer by an exhibition of Rudolph Koch's works. Zapf became one of the most influential type-designers of the 20th century, with many of his designs passing into common use. From the description of Hermann Zapf papers, 1957-1966.
